Self-Centered = Love For All

About the Event

Dr. Symphonie D. Smith is an Independent Marriage and Family Therapist (licensed in DC, MD, MI and

OH). She has been providing therapeutic services to individuals, couples and families for over 9 years,

across various settings such as psychiatric hospitals, university clinics, community agencies and private

practice. Dr. Smith has taught as an adjunct faculty member at Walsh Jesuit University (Ohio), Bowie

State University (Maryland), Virginia Tech (Virginia) and Northcentral University (virtual). She is an

approved supervisor for other Marriage and Family Therapists in the country and a nerd for research

that centers African Americans. She is alum and ad hoc reviewer for the Minority Fellowship Program,

sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the

American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT).

Dr. Smith is also the owner and founder of Personal Space: Self-Centering Therapy, LLC, where she helps

clients by teaching them how to move themselves from the end of their priority lists, to the center of

their worlds. She is currently on a mission to elevate the entire Black collective, by helping one Busy

Black woman at a time, learn to self-center.

As a Busy Black woman herself, she is determined to use all her resources, expertise and platforms

(education, therapy, research, mentorship, supervision, entrepreneurship, hugs, etc.) to make a real

difference in her community, WITHOUT sacrificing herself. “No more superwoman’ allowed ... healing

makes the magic stronger!”

When Dr. Smith is not nerding out about research and therapy or teaching anyone who will listen about

her self-centering philosophy, she enjoys trying new food, Latin dance, live music, yoga, anything related

to natural hair, true crime, podcasts and spending time with loved ones.
